I am so excited to share with you my 2023 Pressed Flower Christmas card designs. In addition, I am including a few useful tips. After making well over 100 cards these tips should help you avoid a few mistakes. Why all those cards? Well, mostly for my Etsy Store that launched over the summer. The cards include both general-purpose cards along with the new Christmas cards.
So, click on the video below and see all the Christmas card designs and the tips learned along the way.
Christmas Card Tip Summary
Tip 1 – Make a template
I find it useful to make an individual template for each card. I use these templates to ensure consistency in the designs. In addition, I lay out my plant material on the template first and then transfer/glue to the card.
Tip 2 – Measure, measure, measure
When I create a template, I want my design to be centered on the card (at least for the Christmas card designs). I rely upon a ruler to ensure that I have a centered design. Simply find the center of the card based on the length and width of the card using your ruler. I then make a small pencil mark at that point. In the video, I share measuring advice for each design.
Tip 3 – Use a measuring spoon for glue
I find less glue is wasted if I use a measuring spoon instead of pouring glue from the container (at least when using Mod Podge). Usually, all I need is a 1/4 teaspoon of glue at a time. In addition, I use either a piece of wax paper, parchment paper, or tin foil to hold the glue. Some type of material where the glue will not leak through.
Tip 4 – Use a toothpick to apply glue
When making a card using dried pressed flowers, not much glue is needed. In the past, I used a 1/4 inch paintbrush. However, too much glue was being applied with this approach. Now I use the pointed end of a toothpick to apply ‘dots’ of glue on the plant material. I find there is less opportunity to have glue spots on the cards using this approach.
Christmas Card Tools used in the video
In the video, I mention a few tools I use in creating these Christmas cards. Below is a list of the tools. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Toothpicks forPapermate Sharpwriter for marking the center of the card or lines matching the template. The pencil is good and sharp and does not break easily. However, the eraser is the best. There are no ‘eraser lines’ left on the card stock.
Pentel Sunburst Gold Metallic Medium Gel pen. I use this pen to draw the ‘strings’ or lines holding the wreath, ornament, and pine swath. Not sure what to say except that it works perfectly.
1/8 inch gold satin ribbon was used to make the bows on the cards.
